BIO

Miriam Kulmer is a Pop / Jazz Vocalist from Austria. Having been born into a family of musicians, music always played an important part of her life. She began to sing at the age of 5, first in churches, then in choirs and later with different local Bands.

Although she learned how to play the clarinet and piano, she found her passion best expressed in singing. In 2013 Miriam, having decided to deepen her knowledge of Jazz, started to take singing lessons with Mag. Simone Kopmajer (Musikschule Gleisdorf), took part in several jazz workshops and in 2015 was admitted to the University of Music and the Performing Arts Graz as a student of Prof. Dena DeRose.
Although her schedule is full of engagements, Miriam finished her Bachelor’s degree in February 2020 and her second Bachelor’s degree in  “vocal pedagogy study” in 2021 – both with distinction.

Since then she has worked and learned from a variety of different musicians, such as Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Kate McGarry, Sachal Vansandani, Theo Bleckmann, Kristin Korb, Norma Winston, Ingrid Jensen, Michael Abene, Jim McNeely, The Vine Street Horns, Jazzmeia Horn….Throughout the years, Miriam is/was part of various Bands & Projects – like: Jimmy & The Jukes, The Supreme Sisters, ABBA Symphonic, Miriam Kulmer Quartett, Duo Milly, Trio Molly, Rygla (“Tschüss mit E”)..And also seen and heard as guest solist in bands like Brass Big Band Hartberg, KonsPop Syndicate, Big Band Weiz, Jazz Orchester Steiermark, Sweet & Swing Orchestra Scheifling, Bigband Trofaiach.

In May 2019, Miriam had the honor to sing for Phil Collins in a concert, within the framework of an honorary doctorate that the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz gave to him. A moment she’ll never forget…

Jimmy & The Jukes

So glad and happy to be a part of this fantastic band since 2016 as female leadvocalist. I just love making music with these guys – it feels like we are 9 pieces of a puzzle, that just really fit together. Sadly, we couldn’t play live Gigs anymore since already a year, so we figured out another way to make music together – Studio Projects. So here’s a Cover of „Don’t start now“ by Dua Lipa.

Miriam Kulmer Quartett

February 2020 – my Bachelor Recital in Graz, Austria. I performed a concert with my band – Miriam Kulmer Quartett, and in this case, even extended with a string quartet. One of my emphases through my Bachelor study was Arranging and Composing. I thought I’d give it a try in my last recital – so I arranged a wonderful Bossa Nova by Antonio Jobim for string quartet and band, called Dindi 😊

Rygla - Tschüss mit E

Rygla – Tschüss mit E. „Dialektfusion“ – a colorful and kinda crazy (but in a good way) Project with Bandleader Robert Riegler (bass & voc). So grateful for the opportunity to be part of this Band with great musicians like: Christoph Helm (guit), Martin Wöss (keys) and Christian Ziegelwanger (dr).

Here is a live recording/video from the Outreachfestival in Schwaz (Tirol) 2020.

Tribute to Phil Collins

The „Lockdown Phil Collins Tribute“, clearly influenced by Phil Collins‘ Live Concerts – what a Project. Really satisfied with the Outcome of that Cover – but not surprised – with sooo many amazing musicians. Not being able to perform on stage for such a long time is not easy for passionate musicians – but projects like this can „ease the pain“ and spread some joy. 😊

Tasty Tunes

A Summer Project in July 2020 with the Studio Band „Tasty Tunes“ (Harald Vorraber/Markus Kulmer/Ratschi Bahaudeen)

I got invited as a special guest to sing a  Cover of an Austrian Singer called Saint Lu and her tune „Don’t miss your own life“. I had a blaaaast working with these guys – so we’ll see, maybe there’s something more coming in the future. 😊

KUG Jazz Orchestra

What a truly amazing night and concert back in May 2019.. I had the honor to sing for Phil Collins himself with a few of his fantastic musicians and the wonderful KUG JazzOrchestra 😀 here’s – Do nothing ‚til you hear from me.

Featuring The Vine Street Horns, Brad Cole and the KUG Jazz Orchestra @ Mumuth Graz

Santa's Musicians

This Project is really special – two music students from Switzerland (Sarah-Maria Schmid and Cécile Willa) decided to create a „Musical Advent Calender“ to support musicians during this crazy period of being not allowed to perform live/on stage. Every day, from 1st ‚til 25th of December, they shared a performance of various artists/bands on their platform – great support and a very nice idea. Glad I could be a part of it. 😊

Vocal & Brass

Since 2016 I have the honor to be part of this great project in Hartberg called „Vocal & Brass“. A Brass Big Band (conducted by Herbert Monsberger) in combination with two vocalists – Thomas Schleimer and me. Every year I’m amazed by the pure and massive sounds that this Bigband can create – it’s always a huge pleasure and joy to perform with them.
